Channel Successors
Setting channel successors
Channel Successors
A channel successor is the person that will become the new founder of the channel if the current founder(s) lose their NickServ-account (this can be because they are inactive for 365 days or because they remove their account).
- You can see who the successor of the channel is by looking up the info of the channel:
/msg ChanServ info <#channel>
- For example, channel info for #coffee:
/msg ChanServ info #coffee
As an example the output of the #coffee channel:
- -ChanServ- Information on #coffee:
- -ChanServ- Founder : jess
- -ChanServ- Successor : Dianora
- -ChanServ- Registered : Apr 27 08:54:42 2023 +0100 (4 weeks, 1 days, 3 hours ago)
- -ChanServ- Mode lock : +nt-lk
- -ChanServ- Flags : Secure, KeepTopic, Fantasy
- -ChanServ- Prefix : ! (Default)
- -ChanServ- *** End of Info ***
- Dianora will become founder should jess's account be removed.
- If you a channel has 2 founders, the successor will only become the new founder if both founders are removed.
- If the current founder drops the channel (unregisters the channel), the successor will not be made founder. Instead, the channel and all access will completely be removed.
Who is chosen as the Channel Successor?
The channel successor is the person that, apart from the current founder(s), has the most access on the channel.
Flagslist of a sample channel:
- -ChanServ- Entry Nickname/Host Flags
- -ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
- -ChanServ- 1 Jalapenio +AFORefiorstv
- -ChanServ- 2 Luyer +AOeiortv
- -ChanServ- 3 Mouring +AOefiorstv
- -ChanServ- 4 Brando +AOeiortv
- -ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
- -ChanServ- End of #chatzone FLAGS listing.
- In this channel, Jalapenio is the current founder and Mouring is the successor because he has more flags than all other people.
It does not matter how much access the successor has, they can even have just VOP (auto-voice). As long as they have the most access.
Example:
- -ChanServ- Entry Nickname/Host Flags
- -ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
- -ChanServ- 1 Jalapenio +AFORefiorstv
- -ChanServ- 2 Luyer +i
- -ChanServ- 3 Mouring +iv
- -ChanServ- 4 Brando +AViv
- -ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
- -ChanServ- End of #Giggles FLAGS listing.
- Brando will be the successor because he has the most access.
If you have multiple people that have the most access and can be successor, then it depends on whether or not someone has the +S-flag:
One of the possible Successors has the +S-flag
If someone has the +S-flag, they will be the channel successor if there is nobody who has more access than that person.
- You can give the +S-flag with the following command:
/msg ChanServ flags <#channel> <nickname> +S
- Example:
/msg ChanServ flags #chatzone Brando +S
- Only one person can have the +S-flag. If you give it to a 2nd person, the first person will lose the flag.
- The +S-flag is not included when giving someone +*-flags (all flags).
Examples:
- -ChanServ- Entry Nickname/Host Flags
- -ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
- -ChanServ- 1 Jalapenio +AFORefiorstv
- -ChanServ- 2 Luyer +AOeiortv
- -ChanServ- 3 Mouring +AOefiorstv
- -ChanServ- 4 Brando +AOefiorstv
- -ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
- -ChanServ- End of #chatzone FLAGS listing.
- Brando will be the Successor because he has the +S-flag and nobody has more access than him.
- -ChanServ- Entry Nickname/Host Flags
- -ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
- -ChanServ- 1 Jalapenio +AFORefiorstv
- -ChanServ- 2 Luyer +AOeiortv
- -ChanServ- 3 Mouring +AORVefiorstv
- -ChanServ- 4 Brando +ASOViortv
- -ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
- -ChanServ- End of #chatzone FLAGS listing.
- Brando has the +S-flag, but Mouring has more access, so Mouring is chosen as the channel successor.
None of the possible Successors have the +S-flag
If none of the possible Successors have the +S-flag, then the person that is first in the access list will be the successor.
Examples:
- -ChanServ- Entry Nickname/Host Flags
- -ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
- -ChanServ- 1 Jalapenio +AFORefiorstv
- -ChanServ- 2 Luyer +AOeiortv
- -ChanServ- 3 Mouring +AOeiortv
- -ChanServ- 4 Brando +AOefiorstv
- -ChanServ- 4 Frank +AOeiortv
- -ChanServ- 5 Mike +AOefiorstv
- -ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
- -ChanServ- End of #chatzone FLAGS listing.
- Brando and Mike are possible candidates to become successor. However, Brando comes first in the access-list, so he will be the Channel Successor.
- -ChanServ- Entry Nickname/Host Flags
- -ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
- -ChanServ- 1 Jalapenio +AFORefiorstv
- -ChanServ- 2 Luyer +AOeiortv
- -ChanServ- 3 Mouring +AOeiortv
- -ChanServ- 4 Brando +AOefiorstv
- -ChanServ- 4 Frank +ASOeiortv
- -ChanServ- 5 Mike +AOefiorstv
- -ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
- -ChanServ- End of #chatzone FLAGS listing.
- Frank has the +S-flag, but he does not have the most access, so he cannot be the successor. None of the successor-candidates (Brando and Mike) have the +S-flag, so they will be chosen by their position in the access-list: Brando comes first so he will be the Successor.
Changing the channel successor
Step 1: Give the most access
If you want to change the channel successor, the first thing you have to do, is make sure that there is nobody with more access than that person (only the founder(s) may have more access). An easy way to do this, is by giving that person full access: /msg ChanServ flags <#channel> <nickname> +*
- Example:
/msg ChanServ flags #Giggles Tommy +*
- Successors do not need to have full access, they can also have less access. As long as they have the most access.
Step 2: Give the +S-flag
The next step is to give the desired person the +S-flag to solve any issues where other people have the same access: /msg ChanServ flags <#channel> <nickname> +S
- Example:
/msg ChanServ flags #Giggles Tommy +S
Step 3: Check
Check the channel, if it was successful: /msg ChanServ info <#channel>
- Example:
/msg ChanServ info #Giggles
- -ChanServ- Information on #Giggles:
- -ChanServ- Founder : Jalapenio
- -ChanServ- Successor : Tommy
- -ChanServ- Registered : Apr 25 18:51:57 2022 +0100 (1 years, 4 weeks, 4 days ago)
- -ChanServ- Mode lock : +nt-lk
- -ChanServ- Flags : Secure, KeepTopic, Fantasy
- -ChanServ- Prefix : ! (Default)
- -ChanServ- *** End of Info ***
Overview
- Give the person the most access (e.g. full access):
/msg ChanServ flags <#channel> <nickname> +*
- Give the person the +S-flag:
/msg ChanServ flags <#channel> <nickname> +S
- Check if it was successful:
/msg ChanServ info <#channel>
Note for advanced users: You can also combine the first two commands by using +*+S (no space between +* and +S!): /msg ChanServ flags <#channel> <nickname> +*+S
